The Other Boleyn Girl?
In the beginning Mary Boleyn tells Anne Boleyn that the king is very much in love with his wife, the queen, yet a few paragraphs later it talks of how the king "is not taken and likes easy women". Maybe I’m stupid, but am I not getting something? Is the king married and in love or what?!
In the book, King Henry the 8th is a womanizer and back then "love" was not what it is today. Henry stopped liking Catherine of Aragon when she failed to produce a son, or an heir for England for Catherine only had a daughter who became Queen Mary in later years. Henry was dissatisfied and began to philander, but previous to Mary Boleyn, Henry had another mistress named Mary Blout and had a son with her but the son died when he was around 6 years old, many believe that he was murdered.
Historically, Mary Boleyn arrived in England from the French court and was little more than a prostitute, she was previous the King of France’s mistress and Henry thought that he could get a little experience from an "experianced" woman. Anne Boleyn arrived at court and met King Henry for the first time in 1523 and was ashamed of her sister’s loose morals. As you know probably if you finished the book King Henry wanted a divorce from Catherine of Aragon when he was seduced by Anne Boleyn, she made him believe that they loved each other and that she could give him a son. So as Henry began to try for a divorce, he petitioned the Pope in Rome for one but Catherine was a princess of Spain and Spain and the Pope were close so he got denied. King Henry was angry and often had tantrum when he did not get something his way thus, the he uprooted the entire religion of England, creating the Anglican chuch which is a sector of Protestantism. (Today the Monarch is still the head of the church for England) In 1533, King Henry and Anne Boleyn were married in secret because Anne was pregnant and Henry did not want the baby claimed as illegitimate. As the years went by Anne, now the Queen of England, failed to produce a male heir and on May 19th, 1536 Anne Boleyn was executed by beheading. And King Henry moved on to his next four wives.
