Should I join the Marines?
I’m currently in the Army Reserves and have done a tour of duty in Iraq. I’ve only been in for I contracted in May of ‘07 and am 20 years old. I have the option of staying in the Reserves and pursuing law enforcement here at home but I’ve also thought about, and wish I had done it in the first place, switching over and doing active duty Marines. I guess I just wanna be able to serve to the best of my ability and be challenged, that’s why I’m thinking Marines cause I like to be pushed and challenged to be the best I can be. I’m unsure at this point as to which route I should take. Regardless of whether I stay here or switch over, I’m sure I’ll be going down range again, ‘just might wanna choose which group of guys I can go with second time around. Advice from any prior service or veterans would be much appreciated.

no and ya cant have a war if no body goes…

most likely they will count most of your time with the reserves id go and retire at 35-40yrs old beat’s a normal job and the benifits are free. out here your gonna pay for them

currently the Marine Corps isn’t taking prior service… Marines or not!
Kinchy | Feb 05, 2010

Ever considered going for Ranger or Special Forces? That is an option that will give you a challeange and while I will give the Marines all the respect in the world, I seriously doubt Marine Boot Camp is harder than Ranger School or Special Forces Selection.

If you want to join the Marines anyway then you can actually do a DD 368 and try to switch over like if you was trying to go active Army. However, your unit doesn’t have to release you and even if they would release you there’s still the issue of seeing if the Marines will even take prior service.
AD | Feb 05, 2010

Stay Army. You’d have to go through Boot Camp again, and drop in rank to E2.

So, how are you living?
I’m trying to find a balance between saving and spending. I want to enjoy the money I make, and live life as it happens. I also see the need to save for rainy days (and the day I don’t want work or can’t work). How do YOU do it?

Currently, my only option of living is renting. I work a full-time job and a part-time job (a blessing in itself), and have no dependents but my cats LOL. I don’t mind paying 800-1100 for rent (utilities included). Some feel like this is high (for one-two bedroom). I’m not a huge spender on clothing and stuff. Food is my big spending as I love to eat out! Should I, at 23, live below my means and save, save, save OR should I assume tomorrow isn’t promised and enjoy things now?

How are you living? What do you think?

There are a lot of fun things you can do for very little money. I like picnics in nice weather and sitting around in front of a fireplace when it is cold.

I always have lived below my means, which permitted early retirement at 47. I made that choice because my father died at 46 and I wanted to play at least a little while. That was 17 years ago and I’ve never been sorry.

Life is a series of choices. When I was young I was willing to wait for some of life’s luxuries. Now I have more than most of my peers.

There isn’t one right way to make this decision. Do what feels right to you.

After more than 30 years of being married I still brown bag it to work most days. I force a small amount into a 401K but otherwise break even at the end of the month.
Carl P | Feb 04, 2010

You really should try to save as much as possible. But at the same time enjoy life as well.

Here is what I do. I work on average 65 hours a week every week of the year. That is the average. Alot of weeks I work more then 80 hours a week. This allows me to take time off and travel. Last year I took 8 weeks off in total throughout the year and went on 5 vacations including Ireland for a PBS concert filming of Celtic Woman. I live on company property where I work so I live rent free and my employer pays all my living expenses except my long distance telephone calls, internet and my medical insurance. My food, power, TV, basic phone service etc are all covered by my employer.

This enables me to save money in addition to my being able to take time off every couple of months. Last year I put away about $17,000 into long term savings. I save in gold, silver and to hedge against the dollar I buy Canadian currency.

I live as cheap as possible but when I travel I don’t care how much I spend. When traveling I stay at 4 star hotels, eat expensive meals, and I have this habit of going to see Celtic Woman in concert as many times as possible. As a result I spend thousands in concert tickets. I enjoy the time off and I love traveling. Living in Alaska can be boring at times because there isn’t alot up here to do in the way of entertainment so I hop on a plane about every 2 or 3 months to the Lower 48.

By the way I dont work an office job. I work as a cook and I love my job. Never a day passes where I dread going into work. Ive been doing it for going on 17 years and I enjoy it. I live below my means most of the time and save but I do have the ability to play as well.

Pinocchio

Pinocchio
Pinocchio (1940)

IMDB rating: 7.60

Plot: Inventor Gepetto creates a wooden marionette called Pinocchio. His wish that Pinocchio be a real boy is unexpectedly granted by a fairy. The fairy assigns Jiminy Cricket to act as Pinocchio’s “conscience” and keep him out of trouble. Jiminy is not too successful in this endeavor and most of the film is spent with Pinocchio deep in trouble.

Interesting paradox - I have some. Do you?
Do you know any (or any answers to my examples)?
For example,
1. Man creates time machine and goes back to when he was born. He murders his mother, therefore he ceases to exist. Because he does not exist, his mother cannot be killed. What do you think?
2. If Pinocchio simply stated, "My nose will grow now." What would happen?
3. Can Superman commit suicide?

And another random question:
– If someone makes a statement they believe to be true, although it is not, is it lying or is it wrong?
Or another addition to that question: What if I make an untrue statement that I believe is true, then over time that statement becomes true? Is it still wrong / lie.

Please explain and give me your own!! :)
Here are some things we came up with discussing these.
1. It would depend on how time works, which we do not know.
2. To reference the book, Pinocchio at one point, on the cart, says "We’ll make it!" fully believing that they would. When they didn’t make it, his nose grew.
3. The arguement to that one is that Superman alone cannot kill himself because it only weakens him and by the time he’d get close enough to eat / do anything else with it, he would be too weak to do it.

Lying –
Example: If I say "The sky is red." fully believing that it was, am I lying? And if, by some crazy turn of events the sun does turn red, am I lying or wrong?

Hobbes, you present some interesting ones. Thank you!

1) Well if his mom dies, he no longer exists and is erased from the timeline. His mother, is still alive, but is not technically "his mother," but she’s still a person and can be killed.
2) He’s making an incorrect prediction, he doesn’t know if it will.
3) One word: kryptonite

– wrong, lieing is when some person knows otherwise
– wrong, because you don’t know it to be a lie
firebird703xx | Dec 09, 2009

Wow, The best question I have seen on yahoo answers so far, It intrigues me! I think that your answer to the "lying" examples might be in here:

Big lie
A lie so colossal that no one would believe that someone could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.
[edit]Bluffing
To bluff is to pretend to have a capability or intention one does not actually possess. Bluffing is an act of deception that is rarely seen as immoral when it takes place in the context of a game where this kind of deception is consented to in advance by the players. For instance, a gambler who deceives other players into thinking he has different cards to those he really holds, or an athlete who hints she will move left and then dodges right is not considered to be lying (also known as a feint). In these situations, deception is acceptable and is commonly expected as a tactic.
[edit]Bold-faced lie
A bold-faced (often also referred to as bare-faced or bald-faced, although all three have slightly different meanings) lie is one that is obviously a lie to those hearing it. For example, a child who has chocolate all around his mouth and denies that he has eaten any chocolate has told a bold-faced lie.
[edit]Contextual lie
One can state part of the truth out of context, knowing that without complete information, it gives a false impression. Likewise, one can actually state accurate facts, yet deceive with them. To say "yeah, that’s right, I slept with your best friend" utilizing a sarcastic, offended tone, may cause the listener to assume the speaker did not mean what he said, when in fact he did.
[edit]Emergency lie
An emergency lie is a strategic lie told when the truth may not be told because, for example, harm to a third party would result. For example, a neighbor might lie to an enraged wife about the whereabouts of her unfaithful husband, because said wife might reasonably be expected to inflict physical injury should she encounter her husband in person. Alternatively, an emergency lie could denote a (temporary) lie told to a second person because of the presence of a third.
[edit]Exaggeration
An exaggeration (or hyperbole) occurs when the most fundamental aspects of a statement are true, but only to a certain degree. It is also seen as "stretching the truth" or making something appear more powerful, meaningful, or real than it actually is.
[edit]Fabrication
A fabrication is a lie told when someone submits a statement as truth, without knowing for certain whether or not it actually is true. Although the statement may be possible or plausible, it is not based on fact. Rather, it is something made up, or it is a misrepresentation of the truth. Examples of fabrication: A person giving directions to a tourist when the person doesn’t actually know the directions. Often propaganda is classified as a fabrication.
[edit]Jocose lie
Jocose lies are lies meant in jest, intended to be understood as such by all present parties. Teasing and sarcasm are examples. A more elaborate instance is seen in some storytelling traditions, where the humour comes from the storyteller’s insistence that the story is the absolute truth, despite all evidence to the contrary (i.e., tall tale). There is debate about whether these are "real" lies, and different philosophers hold different views (see below).
[edit]Lie-to-children
A lie-to-children is a lie, often a platitude, which may use euphemism(s), which is told to make an adult subject acceptable to children. Common examples include "The stork brought you" (in reference to childbirth) and the existence of Santa.
[edit]Lying by obsolete signage
Examples are the continued use of old stationery that has printed information such as a previous telephone number, or advertising that remains painted on a wall after an enterprise has ceased business.
[edit]Lying by omission
One lies by omission by omitting an important fact, deliberately leaving another person with a misconception. Lying by omission includes failures to correct pre-existing misconceptions. An example is when the seller of a car declares it has been serviced regularly but does not tell that a fault was reported at the last service. Propaganda is an example of lying by omission.
[edit]Lying in trade
The seller of a product or service may advertise untrue facts about the product or service in order to gain sales, especially by competitive advantage. Many countries have enacted Consumer protection laws intended to combat such fraud. An example is the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act that holds a seller liable for omission of any material fact that the buyer relies upon.
[edit]Lying through your teeth
When one lies face-to-face with the intended recipient.
[edit]Misleading/Dissembling
A misleading statement is one where there is no outright lie, but still retains the purpose of getting someone to believe in an untruth. "Dissembling" likewise describes the presentation of facts in a way that is

1 he can’t travel back to before he was born because he hadn’t been born yet. ( it has been proven theoretically possible to travel into the future and some assume that you could also travel backwards in time but it has not been as accurately confirmed as forward time travel, therefore I suggest that if you can travel back in time then you would become have the age corresponding to that point in your life, ie you go back to when you are 5 and you would be yourself at 5, and then you’re stuck there and you wouldn’t remember the travel part.)
2 his nose would grow because he thought it was a lie because he thought it wouldn’t do it. But it’s important to know if he said this before or after he first discovered that he had that condition, because it effects the intention of pinocchio in regards to the statement
3 yes he can, but only he can by means of physical assault such as ligature caused asphyxiation, or strangulation resulting in asphyxiation and/or blood loss/constriction

If they believe it to be true it is not lying it is just erroneous, aka ignorant and it is effectively almost as bad as lying if one does so habitually.
The correct or incorrect nature of a statement relates directly to the time at which that statement was made, ie if it’s wrong when you say it then it won’t change with time, you wil always have been wrong. If it becomes true then you would have to redicuss the topic to be right that time

1. Watch Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Depends if this question is asked with the theory of alternate realities being in existence, or not. If not, and he’s in the same reality, killing his mother would terminate him, and in that order, terminating his time travel, terminating his life therefore saving his mother. If in an alternate reality, his existence would be unaffected.
2. He has no power over his nose growing, therefore stating it will, is a lie. The content is irrelevant.
3. If he can find some Kryptonite to do the job, otherwise, I guess not, he’s superman, the most pointless to watch, boring, flat, predictable super hero to ever be created.

– Nothing is true, nothing is a lie, it’s all man made, we live in a society built on "lies". Lying is intentional, being incorrect is not.

The addition to that question must be how so many wretched people rose to power and kept it.

Barber Paradox
In a village, the barber shaves everyone who does not shave himself/herself, but no one else.
Who shaves the barber?

The Crocodile Sophism
A slim crocodile living in the Nile took a child. His mother begged to have him back. The crocodile could not only talk, but was also a great sophist and stated, "If you guess correctly what I will do with him, I will return him. However, if you don’t predict his fate correctly, I’ll eat him." What statement should the mother make to save her child?

Corpse Bride - DivX Version (Normal Quality), DVD (Good Quality), PDA Version, HD Ready:720p (Super Quality)

Corpse BrideCorpse Bride (2005)

IMDB rating: 7.40

Plot: Blue-tinted, eye-ball-popping, maggot-infested beauty Emily (Bonham Carter) has become known as the Corpse Bride after waiting for her fiance where the couple planned to rendezvous before getting hitched. When her groom arrives, he kills her, and she rests in the ground to wait for her soul mate, whether he knows he is the Corpse Bride’s groom or not. It’s a cold dark night, the moon is full, the stars are bright and the forest is a little bit creepy. Wandering through the black mangled trees, Victor (Depp) just can’t memorize his wedding vows. Victor’s hesitance towards marriage causes him to jumble the words. Two prominent families have arranged their children to be married in order to overcome financial difficulties. As the objects of betrothal, Victor and Victoria (Watson) met for the first time the night before their wedding. It only makes sense that Victor, a groom with cold feet, would have trouble remembering tedious wedding vows. Thus Victor ends up in the dark forest ringing his hands and muttering his vows, the vows that the Corpse Bride hears, bringing her out of the grave. Victor suddenly finds himself married to another woman, a voluptuous bombshell bride who also happens to be dead. Whisked away to the Land of the Dead, Victor finds out that living amongst corpses is not as easy as it seems. Heads easily loose their owners and eyes never seem to stay in their sockets, an adjustment that Victor seems reluctant to accept. Once taken into the Land of the Dead, it is nearly impossible to return, causing Victor to choose between risking Victoria’s life or giving up his own.

Another Tim Burton Question?
I know I just asked a Tim Burton Question, but I have to say…
Which Tim Burton fans out there hated his version of the Willy Wonka movie? And Corpse Bride? I hate the movie. And Alice in Wonderland looks stupid as hell too. But other than that, I love his movies.

I think the Corpse Bride was watered down to become a children’s movie. Most of Burton’s work starts out much freakier than what they become. Same with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I believe his original intent was to make it creepy, hence some of the creepy scenes with Johnny Depp. The whole movie isn’t like that because his box office income would be so small without the whole pg 13 rating.

Alice in Wonderland has the potential to be awesome. I always thought the book was terrifying, so hopefully he’ll make the movie really entertaining to watch, and not just for children.

Shelby Shazam [invasion] | Nov 05, 2009

Even if they look somewhat dumb i always go to see his movies. A big part of why is also for Danny Elfman who composes all of the music for his films and i think he does a great job. So, even if the movie sucks the music is usually still done really well.
Jamie | Nov 05, 2009

I didn’t like his version of Willy Wonka too, mainly because I absolutely hated Depp’s performance. Plus the songs were pretty weak.
BlackSabbath | Nov 05, 2009

Actually I don’t hate those movies. First of all, if you read the Roal Dahl book, you might notice that Burton is truer to the book than the original movie, which Dahl absolutely hated.

Maybe try reading the Lewis Carrol book before seeing AiW. You might be surprised.

The only Tim Burton movie I really hated was Planet of the Apes.
germaine_87313 | Nov 05, 2009

I hated Charlie and the Chocolate factory, just because something is more similar to the book it doesn’t automatically make it good. That film was awful. The first film while different from the book was far superior.
I like Corpse Bride and I haven’t seen Alice in Wonderland so I don’t know about that yet.
I will say I am tired of Burton getting too much credit for films he barely worked on and credit for some he did not work on at all (Coraline). I am also sick of him remaking things, he needs to stick with doing original work Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands, and Beetlejuice were all excellent.

Caling all mewithoutyou music fans!?
What is the song Carousels about ?

the first stanza is all about how society these days is all about being materialistically "wealthy". hes asking himself why do i go to town and look at all theses signs or store advertisments? its because, (only just realising) that he subconsiously wants more matieral posessions so he can feel a sense of belonging. not quite sure what the next little bit is but i think its just about humbling himself. the chorus is about how without God he would be lost. sinai was around the same place where moses and his people wandered in the desert for forty years. he is thinking about ending it all (jumping in the way of the cars) until God surrounds him with his love and he finds a sense of hope. im unsure about the next bit: "your pretty but your all i can see, like a thick fog" it could be a girl and how she got in the way of him getting closer to God (all i can see, thick fog) but aaron uses a girl as metaphors a lot, usually as temptation. in this case it could be the wordly things, new clothes, car etc. just thoughts

I am a 13 year-old who will be auditioning for Brigadoon at my high school in just a few days, and I still have no idea what I am going to sing for it! The song I pick has to be from a Broadway musical, be similar in style to Brigadoon, and I can only sing 16 bars.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Some Enchanted Evening from "South Pacific"
I am not sure how you are going to learn something you don’t already have in a few days and perfect it, But find the song and sing along with it many times every day.
