Is my accountant responsible for having adjustments made?
Long story short, my accountant calculated my late father’s income tax from Jan. 1/09 up to the time of his death in Sept/09. We filed Oct. 25 & my accountant used the 2009 figures. According to the Notice of Assessment it’s stated there was an error in calculating the federal non-refundalbe tax credits, and they corrected the total payable because of a calculation error. Revenue Canada processed the return using the program which was current at the time (dated Jan. 6/2010). Two weeks ago, I received my own tax package & once I receive my T4’s from my employer I can file my income taxes. These packages aren’t made up & distributed in such a short period of time, so I do wonder just WHY the Gov’t used the personal exemptions at the 2008 rates. As the executor of the estate, I am responsible for ensuring that all taxes are filed, paid, etc.etc. Some people have told me that when an accountant calculates the rates, they are responsible for any errors, etc. & should be asked to either reimburse me some or all of their fees, or offer to make corrections.
I’d appreciate any assistance anyone might offer.
